EDM Subgenre: House

House music is probably the most common and mainstream form of EDM floating around these days. It originated in Chicago in the early 1980s, in 1985 it began to spread towards other major north and south American cities and Europe. Later it came to Australia. In the early 90s house music started to be fused with pop and dance genres worldwide and it can still be easily seen in the top 40 today.

House music has a very wide variety of sub genres within it, the ones most found these days would be:
Electro House
Deep House
Tech House
Progressive House

Although it is probably the most popular EDM genre by far still above the still rising Dubstep movement I have found that two to three months after discovering a few of the genre that there is very little creativity in the genre, especially in the new Big Room House (all credit to Martin Garrix for making this genre what it is now) with very similar build-ups just a different melody and a generic drop which sounds almost the same in nearly all of the songs.

EDM Subgenre: Trap

Trap originated in the early 2000s in the southern US. It has a very distinctive sound with a slow tempo, lyrical content and flowing, heavy, typically 808 sub bass bass drum kicks as well as piercing quick hi-hat rhythms.

The genre was named because 'Trap' was a slang term for the place where drug deals went down. David Drake of Complex wrote, 'Trap in the early 2000s wasn't a genre, it was a real place.'

Originally labelled as a sub genre of hip hop or rap, but, from 2010 onwards electronic producers began using trap inspired beats to make their own genre, which was then named EDM Trap but producers and fans alike just called it Trap causing much confusion between the fans of the very obviously separate genres.

In 2013 Diplo and DJ Fresh had huge mainstream success with their track Earthquake which hit number four on the UK Official Top 40 and and edited version was featured in the movie Kick-Ass 2.

Festivals

There are many festivals around the world for dance music, some of these are massive events. Very famous festivals are performed at by some of the best and most popular DJs and producers on the planet.

 Some of these festvals include:
Creamfields
Tomorrowland
Dreamfields

Tomorrowland, probably the biggest dance music festival in the world takes place every year in Boom, Belgium usually around late July over three days since 2011. The festival itself though has been going on since 2005. Tomorrowland 2013 took place between July 26th to July 28th. Over 180,000 people attended the festival over the three days, tickets for the event sold out very fast. Full madness passes sold out in 35 minutes with the remainder being sold out in one second.

When going there you can camp out in a separate location which holds 35,000 festival goers called Dreamville. This is to keep the attendants immersed in the experience of Tomorrowland.

There are many genres of EDM, hundreds, some of my favourites would have to be:

- Melbourne Bounce & Minimal

- Detroit Minimal

- Glitch Hop

- Deep House

Melbourne Bounce & Minimal originated in Melbourne, Victoria, it is a similar genre to house music with very similar BPM, however, it stands out with bouncy basslines and synths with a heavy drop on it. Sometimes it contains vocals, usually rapping as in the infamous 'Melbourne Sound' by Matty Lincoln. Other well known artists in these categories are; Joel Fletcher, Will Sparks, Orkestrated and Uberjack'd. Deorro who is an American producer makes music which is very similar to melbourne bounce
A popular music channel comprising of Melbourne Bounce and Minimal is Melbourne Beats, one of the most well known Melbourne tracks is 'Melbourne Sound' by Matty Lincoln.
